Gutters are interesting. Ok, you got me, no they’re not. They are an unremarkable necessity that ensures rain water doesn’t shoot off your roof and bog the surroundings of the pride and joy that is your home. It collects rain water, allows it to flow to a down-pipe in which it trickles (or pours, if rain is torrential) toward the subterranean storm water system and eventually into a creek, river or the ocean. So you see, gutters are a man made addition to the miracle that is ‘the water cycle’.
I suppose, when it’s put like that, gutters are a little bit interesting.
Seeing as we have sparked a minuscule level of fascination on the subject, let’s keep it flowing (pun intended) by talking about the differences in gutters and box gutters. Your regular gutter is the type that you are most likely to be aware of. The one that is clearly stationed around the rim of your roof and the most obvious when blocked up as water cascades over the top lip like a scaled down Angel Falls. This undesirable water feature can be easily rectified with a visit from your old friends Urban Gutters who will vacuum away the blockage and have everything functioning as it should in no time.
A box gutter is one you may not be aware of as they are rarely in sight from the ground. A box gutter is one that makes up part of the roof design. It can run as a valley between parallel roofs or the roof and a parapet wall. (I know that the word ‘roof’ has been overused here but I’m at a loss as to what other word to use. After all, It’s a roof)
Box gutters are particularly common on modern houses that have a flatter pitch of roof and, with all the new properties being built in both Sydney and Canberra, we come across them frequently. Now, as important as getting all gutters vacuumed is, keeping box gutters clean is particularly vital. With these style of gutters being incorporated into the roof design, if they were to fill up with water due to a restriction or blockage, there is a large chance that it would overflow into the roof space and in to the internal living areas.
Not fun.
The best chance of avoiding this is by having a regular roof inspection and, where needed, a thorough gutter vacuum clean. That’s what we’re here for!
